A dark retreat is a deeply personal and transformative journey into darkness, silence, and solitude

A dark retreat is a powerful practice for personal growth, offering an opportunity to step away from the demands of everyday life and reconnect with inner peace. Immersed in darkness, silence, and solitude, you can calm your mind, reduce stress, gain fresh perspectives, and deepen your self-awareness. And that’s only the beginning.

At our dedicated dark retreat centre, we offer purpose-designed rooms for an immersive experience of complete darkness and silence. Each room is thoughtfully furnished for comfort and includes a private bathroom, providing everything you need for a multi-day journey of self-discovery.

Our Approach to Individual Darkness Retreats

Retreats in complete darkness have deep roots in various spiritual and contemplative traditions, including practices such as Yangtik. We respect these traditions and they can be a source of inspiration for us. However, we are not practicing Buddhists, and we do not lead our retreats as part of Buddhist, Tibetan, or any other religious practice.

We approach darkness primarily from a Western perspective – as an extraordinary space and an opportunity for stillness, self-exploration, and a deeper connection with oneself. We feel close to philosophy, psychology, body-based approaches, and contemporary neuroscience, particularly current understanding of human perception, attention, the constructive and fallible nature of memory, and the nervous system.

In darkness, a person temporarily steps away from an environment that is usually filled with light, images, information, tasks, and expectations. When the amount of external stimulation decreases significantly, attention can naturally begin to turn inward. Bodily sensations, thoughts, memories, emotions, and dreams may become more prominent, along with very subtle layers of perception that are easily overlooked in everyday life.

We do not try to define what a person should experience in darkness. We do not impose a predetermined interpretation on the experience, nor do we teach a specific spiritual technique. Every retreat is different. For some people, it is primarily a period of deep rest. For others, it may be an encounter with themselves, a time of intense inner experience, or an exploration of silence, simplicity, and solitude. For some, it can also offer an undisturbed space to reflect on their direction in life, future visions, decisions, or plans.

Our role is to create the conditions that make it possible to enter this experience deeply while still feeling safe. For this reason, we place great emphasis on complete darkness, minimal noise and external disturbance, privacy, comfort, regular care, and the possibility of support or conversation whenever it is needed.

For us, a guide is neither a guru nor someone who interprets your experience. Rather, they are a person on the other side of the door – someone you know is nearby if you need them, whose presence provides a sense of safety and reassurance.

We do not see darkness as an escape from the world. Rather, we see it as a temporary removal of its “noise.” When, for several days, much of what normally occupies our attention disappears, a very simple space can emerge: a person and their own consciousness.

And it is precisely in this simplicity that, for us, the unique power of a retreat in darkness, silence, and solitude lies.

Holger Kalweit and Dark Therapy – No Therapy, a Psychotherapist, and Expectations

German psychologist Holger Kalweit was the first to systematically introduce dark retreats to Europe.
